PECKPOST

Hi. Been pretty angsty about my prelim grades and the mainstream econs teachers that fucked up all my essays. Ah nevermind.

Here's the video to Sophia by Nerina Pallot. The tune and her voice are beautiful to begin with but what really caught my ear (if there is such a thing) was the clever wordplay on Sophia which is pronounced so-fire. Since she is an indie singer, I immediately felt obliged to understand the lyrics, since they probably aren't some formulaic commercial trash. But I'm not sure what they mean really. Apparently Sophia is the name of her friend in university. What I think (and my thinking is very overrated btw) is that she's explaining the irresistable and consuming nature of love to Sophia, amid the fact that she has lost this man. But I don't understand chunks of lyrics so I may be an ignoramus for all I know.

Nerina Pallot - Sophia

And here are the lyrics

Sophia

Five o'clock and a fire escape symphony
Spilling out across the road and the square
And the sky's the same as your own do ya think of me?
Do the parks and trees and the leaves reach you there?
After the rain, in the lonely hours he haunts me,
Callin out again and again

Sophia, Sophia, I'm burning, I'm burning
It's a fire, a fire I cannot put out
Sophia, Sophia I'm learning that some things I can't go without
And one of them is him

Now I walk the streets like a stranger in my hometown
Learn the language from the words when I speak
But he changed me I'm his ghost since he came around
Now I count the hours and the days in the weeks
Passion and silence, every word, every rhyme a measure
It's the science of the soul
And his books they breathe a reason
And now I wanna know

Sophia, Sophia, I'm burning, I'm burning
It's a fire, a fire I cannot put out
Sophia, Sophia I'm learning that some things I can't go without
And one of them is him

And you, with your newborn eyes,
Have you ever loved a man lke I love him?
Do you hurt but still feel alive, like never before?
Oh Sophia
Sophia

Sophia, Sophia, I'm burning, I'm burning
It's a fire, a fire I cannot put out
Sophia, Sophia I'm learning that some things I can't go without
I, can't, go without him

First one is really funny. It's a mime to 'Torn' by Natalie Imbruglia, the famous song that's about rape where she's like Im all outta faith blah blah blah lying naked on the floor. Yeah sth like that. It is hilarious (the mime not the song duh)

The next one is a new song from Take That called Rule the World. It's the soundtrack to the movie Stardust, which is adapted from Neil Gaiman's work. Cheesy but nice

PECKPOST

Hi everyone! Well my sis is leaving Singapore today for the US and I think the next time we see her will be in 8 months time. Bah kinda sad. My mum is worried for me ama, because she gets really emotional about my sis. Starts qqing and like losing sleep over her. And hotdamn if you're 96 these small jolts can really get to you.

I think in the past few years my ama's been kinda more depressed coz her hearing has deteriorated and that really hampers her communication with people. Right until we bought her the hearing aid, she was qqing about being lonely. Yeah and then my sis ain't home so she's always worried. Plus, I swear everyday she says she'll be brought home to be with the Lord and the Great One has rewarded her request with nothing haha. Not that we want her to die though. It's just that 96 year old bodies are painful to be in. It's arduous for her to get up just to practise walking with a walker.

Hmm oh wells in the past 2 nights I watched 2 movies. First up. 300. What a kickass film

Knowing that this could be a violent movie-of-the-year event I got my parents to watch it as well. Definitely one of the few times my movie interests coincide with my dad's. He's a steven segal fan -_-. Well the CGI was absolutely godly, and I think it also set a precedent for comic-book adaptations by giving the film a particularly hue and sheen such that it actually looked like a comic book. It's incredible. It gives the film a totally surreal look that blurs reality and fantasy.

Haha the violence certainly didn't disappoint. Limbs chopped off, decapitation, eye-stabbing, awesome gore. I can't take torture, but manly gore so owns. Lol such are my double-standards. Plot-wise it wasn't bad either. I thought the climax at the ending was pretty good (cept I realised that leonidas had about 10 easier chances to stab xerxes before this). One thing that troubled me about it was that the main emphasis of the film was that they were fighting for freedom, the right to be free men. And yet from the way they live under spartan law we see that their emotions are often constrained and inhibited because they are forced to keep up the manly image. So yeah I thought it was a little contradictory. Not completely, but just a little.

The next one was a really heavy film. The Sea Inside directed by Alejandro Amenábar is a highly acclaimed Spanish film that raped the Venice Film Fest in 2004 by winning Best Picture and also Best Actor for Javier Bardem.

The movie is based on a true story and revolves around a quadriplegic's bid to end his life by euthanesia after being bed-ridden for about 25 years. The Sea Inside refers to his fantasies about the sea and other things like intimacy that exist inside his head. The great thing about this movie is that it's not focused on the legal battle, but the guy himself Ramon Sampedro. It's about his pain, frustration and charisma. I mean he gets himself into a love triangle wtf, he's gotta be a charmer. The love triangle is interesting and it's really integral in pushing the storyline along but I'm lazy to talk about it haha. He kills himself in the end.

Javier Bardem gives an astounding performance as Ramon. I cannot even describe how good he is. How he manages to make a quadriplegic attractive, humorous, even seductive while also conveying his suffering and bitterness is quite brilliant. It is a truly absorbing performance. If any of you have read Love in a Time of Cholera by Marquez, it's going to be made into a film and Bardem is going to star as Florentino Ariza aka the guy who becomes lovesick for like 100 years or sth (a difficult task I think -_-). And he's already starred in the Coen brother's new highly, highly acclaimed movie No Country for Old Men as the main villian. Uber versatile sia!

Well one of the reasons I'm lazy to talk about the love triangle and stuff is that the movie is so heavy with symbolism and subtlety. I watched the making of the movie and only then I realised how dense it was with meaning and how dense I was not to catch any of it. For example, when he dies at the end suffering (coz he ate cyanide lol), the director was trying to say that if euthanasia was legal, he wouldn't be suffering so much. I was like holy hotdamn I r dum.

Ok I shall end off with 2 videos. One is So Small by Carrie Underwood, who at the moment is uber popular because of her clean, christian country music (the christian right is powaful!) and her chiobu image. I gotta say she is one of very few women I think can pull off boots well. The second one is Over You by Daughtry. The trendy xy told me about the song, and I've been waiting for the video to be released. Love the song.

So small

Over You

Hello i just ate a shitlunch from macs delivery, which prompted me to write this lil review.

Everyone knows the lil yellow suckers part of every fast food meal - glistening sponges of oil deep fried to an unholy perfection. For a geek definition (straight from wiki):

French Fries, commonly known as fries (North America), or chips (United Kingdom, Ireland, and most Commonwealth nations), are pieces of potato that have been cut into batons and deep-fried.

In areas where "chips" is the common term, "French fries" usually refers to the thinner variant found in US-influenced fast food restaurants, or to the even thinner "shoestring potatoes". In North America "chips" generally means potato chips (called "crisps" in the UK and Ireland), which are deep-fried very thin slices of potato that are usually served at room temperature. A more recent hybrid of thicker cross-cut splicings, and generally eaten hot, is "waffle-cut potatoes" (not to be confused with potato waffles made from reconstituted potato).

So I guess everyone has their favourites and stuff, but this is my 10-fry review, going from shitheap to heavenly:

10) BK fries: OMG THESE ARE UTTER SHITPIECES. THE CARDBOARD THAT IT COMES IN TASTES BETTER AND HAS LESS FAT AND IS MORE COLOURFUL. SCREW U BK FRIES SHOULD BE RENAMED TO HAMSTER SHIT. NOT THAT IV EEATEN THOSE. k rant over

9) KFC normal fries: Coming close to utter shitheapness, KFC normal fries blow! Thats why they have mashed potato and chis fries, to mask their inadequecies at making semi decent fries. Only reason why i rate this above BK fries is cuz they arent as cardboardey

8) Macs normal fries: Just had these, MAN they suck. You can get really short snaps at the bottom and longer greasy oil sponges sometimes, which really just blows why cant they be in a normal and predictable size. TOo damn bloody oily

7) Macs shaker fries: Same, but saved by pepper or random flakes

6) Mos fries: I like these cuz you can actually taste the potato. Fat lil buggers that dont make you too sick cuz theres less surface area to desecrate with grade V petroleum. Hot too!

5) KFChis fries: Im big fan of cheese so actually im grading the cheese. I love the cheese tho sometimes the whole thing makes you sick as hell. Maybe mos should go above these. But yea i love the cheese. Unhealthy globs of artery-clog

4) Macs curly fries: These are actually not bad imitations! But they do taste SOMEWHAT different tis a subtle taste that is all but forgotten ever since AnW got bbqed.

3) LJ's crispy as hell fries: Niec! Esp the lil fried shavings they give which dont do anything except be fried and sit around glowing in oil. But yea realyl crispy and taste nice too.

2) Carl's Junior waffle cut fries with salsa: pwnage. A combination of mos potato-genuiness, curly fry taste and crispyness. I love em esp with the free salsa that they give i could eat a whole ground of them. Not really fair competition though, ex as rofl.

1) AnW curly fries of ownage with meat sauce: best ever too bad they closed down. For those that remember i think you'd agree that its way above all the others. Man they pwn.

PECKPOST

Hello! The prelims are over and I'm just happy for that. I'll leave my results up to the heavens. Anyway yesterday after the math paper the h2 math boys went to j8 to see if we could catch a movie. Well since the movie summer in US is officially over, I thought the selection would be pretty limited. BUT. I did want to watch SHOOT EM UP if it was in release because I'm hearing great kickass things about it. But there was nothing except hairspray. And I so don't dig hairspray. Last thing I wanted to see was tranny travolta -_-.
So we trashed talked for sometime in KFC before going home. That night memum and I watched Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni.

I had only watched a fraction of the movie before so I wanted to watch it in its entirety this time. Well the first 1/3 or so was about setting the whole scene for the story, and showcasing Benigni's humour and stuff. That part was a little too slapstick for us. I think it didn't help that it was in italian. My sis was like hohum this sucks and then went away to read or sth. But as it turns out, my sis was a jinx of sorts because after she left the rest of the movie was really quite wonderful :). I think once the family entered the concentration camp, the humour was just given a whole new dimension. Humour in the face of death or in the face of hardship is always that much more poignant. And the father's love for his son was really clear to the viewer. My cold heart which has been steeled in recent times by the rational logic of econs and math, yielded to such moving scenes. Damn I'm tingly.

And anyway today I watched another movie The Motorcycle Diaries which is really one of the movies that has brought Spanish films to prominence in the 21st century.

It's about this motorcycle journey that Che Guevara took with his friend across South America that supposedly shaped his views and prompted him to start a revolution. I thought it was a great film. Really gritty and natural. Some of the shots of South America were really beautiful and the story of the 2 guys' adventures is just chock full of interesting vignettes and how they moulded Guevara. Strong performances too from Gael Garcia Bernal (Che G) and Rodrigo Sernal. I'm not sure what I was feeling at the end. It was one of those 'Damn what an awesome journey' kinda feelings.

Ok then tonight I'll be watching 300 with memum. Hope she digs spartans. And blood.

During the prelim studying period I amassed quite a trough of cool videos. And now I shall unleash them on you.

Raymond Crowe - A Wonderful World. He's singing alright, but just in a different way.

This was probably the highlight of the emmys show, from what I hear.

If you are a normal person, its really funny.

If you are a fan of the daily show or even stephven, this is roflgodlike.

This is the most kickass video I have seen this month.

Legendary badass pitcher Randy Johnson throws a 95 mph fastball. And decimates a pidgeon. And its not even gory. It's just surreal.

PECKPOST

Hello prelims have been kinda mixed so far I guess. I got totally fucked for math paper 1. Yeah totally utterly assfucked. I thought a lot of stuff was harder than in the TYS..well I think. What a total letoff. I just felt totally decimated sucky. I'm pretty much staring at a U or S. Arghh once they add some unsubtle triple twist on a particular topical question it totally utterly rapes my mind and I don't know what to do. Times that by about 12412247 and there you have it...my awesome prelim trashshitbitchpaper.

And lately in the past few days I've been having this mild pins and needles feeling in my thumb, along with mild numbness as well. I'd like to think its a temporary thing because the way I hold my pen does put pressure (well possibly) on my thumb nerve point, cutting off blood supply. But neither my mum or I can see why this would extend beyond the exam time, to night-time as well. Oh wells hope its not carpal tunnel syndrome. Well if I lose me thumb because of this...just one more reason to shout Fuk teh Prelims!

Argh I've a feeling that this has the potential to sink in even deeper than it already has, and that when it does I'm gonna feel like a monster pile of turd. I'll probably like dig a hole in my garden and bury myself and all my woes, and let my angst feed the garden of life...turning it into TEH GARDEN OF DEATH. LET ALL THINGS WITHER PLS AND DROOP AND DIE. WTFANGST IM GONNA LISTEN TO ROOOTLESS TREEE. FKKKUUUUUANDALLWEBEENTHRU

Ok then rant over. Nice video of X factor (UK Idol) where Leon sings Home by Buble. Heartbreaking when he says 'I came by meself...'

My ass is currently getting whooped by the NJC math paper lip sent me, but fear not! I have hit a hot streak of 1.5 questions and that has surely raised my morale.

Anyways econs essays on monday. My tuition teacher warned that RJ tends to set questions that aren't so straightforward, so the standard is probably a tad higher than the ten year series, where usually you get 2 cheapass questions that you can vomit your econs knowledge on. Maybe for RJ you'll get 1. I was like dang! Made me feel really uneasy. Yeah then he gave me some ques to try and man I got some stuff wrong.

So yeah kinda nervy. I think the point is not to spot too narrowly, or perhaps not to spot at all.

I HAF JUST DISCOVERED TE mp3 PLAYTER ON MY PHONE!!
Hello.

Here's the high res trailer to the sequel to the brilliant epic Elizabeth, which was nominated for 6 oscars in 1999, winning one. Not its fault really, because that year had a bumper crop of critically acclaimed titans like Saving Private Ryan and Shakespeare in Love. I watched about half of that first film and I thought it was really really good, though it did have some pretty heavy stuff. Cate Blanchett is some manly woman. Hmm but then again I do tend to shun medieval films because somewhere somehow someones just gotta get beheaded, or someones gotta get stretched on a rack . And my fragile mind just can't take it -_- (I mean...Spanish Inquisition? Thats almost a euphemism for torture :/). Cast looks great though. Clive Owen and Clive Owen's hot accent + geoffrey rush+cate blanchett. So....I guess I'll watch it if I have the balls to.

Sorry just videos again, but COOL VIDEOS nevertheless

New song from Santana featuring Chad Kroeger - Into the Night. Love it, especially the hook just after the chorus. You know I look at Santana and he looks like one of those nice old grandpas that will play scrabble or wii bowling with you...well at least until he starts pwning his guitar with dem fingers. Rockstar grandpa.

Into the Night

and this is the official theme song for all the bourne movies. Basically that badass tune at the end is Extreme Ways by Moby. DAMN I like it.
