Hello. In the evening went out for sec 4 class reunion. Watched POTC. I think overall its a pretty good action thriller, but imo the first 2/3 is way too convoluted. It's like they try to pack too much emotional entanglement and instances of betrayal into it and it just confuses the viewer and derails the plot. Especially in pirate movies, where you need a good, smooth plot to transition from action scene to action scene, it was lacking here. I also thought there was too much dialogue and long drawn out scenes that lower the tempo a bit. Moreover, there are really irritating loose ends that are not properly tied up ala deus ex machina. Some shid just disappears or happens for no good reason (there isn't even good filler to explain it). Humour at some points didn't work too. There were some act-dumb moments from the side characters that didn't work. Oh yeah, some of the emotional scenes were either cheesy or didn't impress.
But anyway this movie does have its bright sparks. Some of the humour does work. Jack Sparrow and his hallucinations are really quite amusing most of the time, and especially in the second half where the battles starts and pirates meet there are some awesomely hilarious moments. I always like Geoffrey Rush's acting so his return was always welcome as well. As for the action, in the second half of the movie it was in no short supply. That's the good thing about big budget movies like Pirates - the action never disappoints and the CG was great. I thought some more impressive CG could have been used in certain scenes but overall the battle scenes were excellent and extremely exciting. I still maintain, though that the CG used in Curse of the Black Pearl have impressed on me the most in the trilogy.
So yeah overall it isn't bad. I think my aforementioned comments seem rather disparaging because the expectation of such movies (esp with the mindblowingly good first one) is always high. You want everything in good balance. Action, humour, a bit of love, a bit of random, CG. So please if you are gonna watch the movie don't let my comments stop you. 2.5 hours is pretty good value for money anyways.
Yeah after that went out for dinner at S11. Well overall it was great to hang out with sec 4 buddies like posef and twinnies again.
